3G/4G Development in China August 22-28

- Chinese telecom equipment supplier ZTE recently unveiled a Smartphone supporting 4G technology at China's Universiade sporting event held in Shanghai, the Shanzai.com reported on August 25, adding that this new device is tailor-made for China Mobile and is based on TD-LTE (Time Division-Long Term Evolution) technology. The new invention features a 3.5-inch touch-screen display and the wireless communications service supporting the TD-LTE, TD-SCDMA (TD-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks. In addition, it is reported that this unnamed Smartphone from ZTE will be pre-embedded with the 2.3 version of the Android OS. Further details regarding pricing and availability of the said Smartphone, however, were not yet disclosed.

 

In related news, during the Universiade sporting event, Shenzhen Mobile, the China Mobile's subsidiary in Shenzhen, stated that its TD-LTE network is capable of achieving the data transmission speed 10 times faster than the current 3G networks.

 

- On August 22, China Unicom launched a new marketing campaign in its 2,300 designated business halls across China, as part of its efforts to boost the base of users subscribing to its CDMA service, the Sina News reported on August 23. Through the new campaign, users are allowed to have full 3G service experience with consultations given on-site. Thus far, China Unicom already launched a total of 35,000 campaigns nationwide with the on-site participators totaled up to 810,000.
